Some 'new' stuff

Here are some spot illustrations from the pitch document for "The Darwins". Can you tell I haven't come up with a style for the backgrounds yet? I don't know if I can pull off what I'm envisioning.....

1) This is one of those 'trust exercises' that evil employers make you do on retreats and such. Unfortunately, Simon is easily distracted....
2) Donald Trunk's birthday -- an opportune time to impess that boss. That cake looks mighty tasty though....

3) "Secretary Day". Strangely, Randy has a new secretary every time this fine day rolls around...

4) Trunk in contemplative pose. This one is suppose to bring to mind the famous painting of Jesus. I like the hair.

B-dee, b-dee, b-dee... tha's all folks! Until next time...

Cubicle Illustration

Here is a full illustration I put together before we decided to rethink things.
Even though I wasn't 100% confident in the look of the characters, I went ahead and inked them up. I think they look a little stronger here, but they still weren't grabbing me. At about this time, we realized that we needed to rethink the overall concept of The Darwins. We liked some of the characters, but there was something missing. So we put things on hold for a bit and went back to brainstorming.

Our setting

Here is the island where our story takes place, literally ballpoint-on-napkin sketch. I've worked with this one on and off but still haven't gotten the illustration to the point where I'm happy with it. More research is needed. Jan. 9, 2005.

Donald Trunk appears

Here is the first drawing I did of Donald Trunk, and he hasn't changed much since then. As you can see from the note on the drawing, his body was too small, especially considering his imposing personality and the fact that he's an elephant. I really love this character. Drawing is dated Jan. 9, 2005.

Original Ancillary characters

Here are a bunch of the side characters we came up with. Some have remained, but most have fallen by the wayside as we made an effort to get away from the family-centric idea for the show. (l-r): Mom, "Crazy Uncle", Lucy (sister), Randy (ama

Original Monkey characters

Here are the original monkey characters designs I came up with. (l-r) Grandpa Leakey, Dad, Pierce. Almost right away, they seemed to derivative to me, and (especially with Pierce) seemed like we were trying too hard to have our main guy be a Gen-X age guy. Drawing is dated Jan. 9, 2005.
